(Site is no longer operational pending a major long overdue overhaul of the entire website. Thank you for your patience. Site should still be visible and searchable for old posts.)

The Lisburn Exiles Forum is dedicated to the memory of James Goddard Collins (The Boss) who single-handedly built LISBURN.COM (with a lot of help from many contributors) from 1996 to 29th November 2012. This website was his passion and helping people with a common interest in the City of Lisburn around the world is his lasting legacy.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Brendan

Thank you for this, I found it very interesting. My dad Billy Thompson was fly weight. He was very well know in boxing circles, but the Billy Thompson mentioned in the records isn't him. This man, when I looked him up, was a Yorkshire man, who strangely enough has just died on 4th January 2009.

Thanks again

Liz

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Brendan
That boxing records site has improved enormously over the past few years. I often look up names. Rinty Monaghan, of course, and Bunty Doran, as well as Spider Kelly, John McManus, and all the old names from Ireland.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

i looking up a site for keerys photos heres 1 anyway

I have the records of most of the Belfast Boxers and a good collection of photographs which I will be only too glad to share. Here are six of the best from L-R Spider Jim Kelly, Jim Keery, Tommy McMenamy, Bunty Doran, Gerry Smith and Freddy Webb. (Freddy was the older brother of Willie Rea from the Market area)did,nt come up will try and sort it out

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Hi Brendan,
On reading your reply to Joe I realized who you were, as a matter of fact I was up visiting Bobbie in lisburn to day and I was telling him about you putting Jim Kerrys record on the forum, as Brain Madden who is writing a book about Jim came up to our house to interveiw Bobbie a fortnight ago for some insight and the crack was great, However Brendan its with regret that I read of your recent setbacks and I hope your luck changes in the near future,
Regards Ted Rooney

Brendan

(Thank you for this, I found it very interesting. My dad Billy Thompson was fly weight. He was very well know in boxing circles, but the Billy Thompson mentioned in the records isn't him. This man, when I looked him up, was a Yorkshire man, who strangely enough has just died on 4th January 2009.

Thanks again

Liz )

hi Liz
i remember Billy Thompson back then dark curly haired lad in those days i,m sure he was heavier than flyweight though more like 9 or 10 stone if my memory serves right i think he was a fitter or mechanic ,however i will look back the records on BOX REC I might stumble on something about him if he boxed pro which im sure he did,i think that was around time Jackie Willis was in the game,i met Jackie last year in newcastle and he had,nt a clue who i was,was donkeys years from we last met all the best barney woods

Re: Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Brendan,

Good to hear from one of the old neighbours, workmates again, we left Lisburn in 1974 & are retired in Clare since 1990. All "homers "are done here at the Cottage we bought, which was just 4 walls then on an acre of land. Hope your wife makes a steady recovery & maybe run into you in Doolin or Galway sometime, we visit there too. Like yourself I only go to Big Races now with my son Kieran at holiday times, no dog racing at all only invites sometimes to Charity do's in Limerick. Never made the fortune promised.
Speaking about the Jawas, I remember when working at Ulster Avenue for Liscon, I got a lift with you, on the pillon seat & flying up the Derriaghy strait, my duncher blew off, never to be seen again. Then, at Carryduff one frosty morning I saw you turning into the job, skidding & tumbling over, but you were unfazed, got up & started work. We were made of the "right stuff." You could keep 2 bricklayers going, plus doing the scaffolding & made your own mortar for us. "Abraham Lincoln abolished black slavery but forgot to abolish white slavery"...as George Morrow used to say.

All the best Barney,
Joe.

Keery/Joe Sharpe

Brendan, I was just wondering if you would have a photo of Joe Sharpe, brother of Peter (Al) Sharpe. I have just completed Peter's story. He had 121 fights, and is the only Irishman to have won three Northern Ireland titles - light, welter and middle - at different weights. Gerry Smyth died recently and there was a massive turnout. Needless to say his fights with Jim Keery were mentioned in a wonderful eulogy. I enjoyed reading your messages.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

I read that when he was sixteen, Jim beat Rinty Monaghan on points.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

yes he did beat rinty not sure what age he was though
and im near certain he also beat jackie patterson who went on to win world title, patterson was murdered in south africa

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Rinty was world champion. I didn't know about the murder. I'll google it. Thanks.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

I remember a Jim Keery that used to live on Warren Park Avenue across the street from my Aunt Minnie (Elliott). I remember us going on holidays with him to Portrush. If this is the same one - Sylvia Walker, now living in Hillsborough might remember some things about him.
