My dad is a great support for me!

My mom's dad died when she was 4 from a heart attack. Her mother was successful-- however, she had a bad or volatile relationship with her husband's, my father's, family. They didn't want them to be together and it influenced my dad in many ways. After they moved to America, From Moscow, my mother tried to move her mom into the house. My dad refused, because of their bad relationship (obviously a hurtful and hard-hearted thing to do, but nonetheless) Years later in Russia, my mom's mother got cancer and consequently died. That really spiraled my mom out of control and she would cry and cry for days. Years later she could cry and look up to the ceiling to ask God why her mother died. She started sleeping a lot and would never play with me, I grew up with her problems surrounding my entire childhood. I remember her telling me I was not capable of doing anything, and often screaming and crying explaining that I need to get away from her. It was hurtful to see her in such a state...I've worked really hard to build a relationship now that I've been back from college but my mom is mentally ill. There is not much I can do with her. 7 years ago my parents divorced and live apart but in the same town. Now a hoarder, my mom's life concentrates and focuses on switching from my dad's well-being, to how much she despise him and how he ruined her life. When she can but she tells me stories of when they will be back together again so we can be in this pretend, illusion-ed, imaginary family. When she found out he has a new girlfriend, she asked me--regardless of my telling her that It hurts me to talk about it-- to tell me everything they did together where they went, how they would talk to each other, if they were happy, what she did for him, if she's moved in "Tell me everything!" She would ask me this 3 weeks straight. I stopped calling or talking to her. I don't want to grow up to be like her. I am doing good in my life and need adequate support to separate her projected feeling at me---with her mental illness. Thanks for listening.

I feel very much for the people on this page describing more horrific abuse than I possibly witnessed. After realizing the issues I had in my life, I do a lot of meditation and the problem and guilt kept arising. When I would do that my mother would always come up in a picture. She was a huge factor in me being a healthy balanced person. Ever since I've been a child and my mom behaved badly, I knew inside there was never anything I could do for her. Being powerless to her actions but having them projected on me day in and day out was hard; I thought I should seek help with people whom have similar experiences. Where to begin. She was sexually abused as child and completely repressed it -- has no recollection of it that she will confront. We weren't allowed to date. Told us men and relationships are evil. She is estranged from her siblings. She lies. She goes from 'the entertainer' to a crazy woman who throws things across the room in a matter of minutes. She has destroyed every single holiday through a psychotic episode.

I did not understand that my mother was mentally ill at the time of the abuse. Chanting, counting, nervous breakdowns, I thought she was evil and crazy but I did not fully understand. My mother horded things, saw things that were not there, confided adult things with me, men in and out of the house. She was on welfare, took pills for everything, kept me out of school 3 out of 5 days a week so she wouldn't have to be alone, we wore the same clothes to school every single day for years, cut me, told me I was a child of the devil...My God I could go on and on.....The good news is that I am an adult now and until I could mentally process the whole mental illness thing I just thought she hated me. Well she is only capable of so much and I understand that. I have learned that what she did to me does not define me and I am responsible for my own actions and I believe that I have great strength and am a good parent to my children. I am blessed to have that understanding and support.

I had always hoped that someday I would be able to take my experiences and help someone else going through it in a positive way. There was a mother in NY that killed her four daughters recently and my heart was broken...for the pain that those girls suffered at the hands of someone that obvioulsly needed help. Again, children fall through the cracks and it was all so senseless. So many kids crying out for help...nobody can put their finger on what is really wrong and they are suffering like I did when I was little...It scares me to think that I could do something and yet not really know how!

My mother didn't work, but she also was rarely home for us kids. When she was she was usually asleep. We could only rarely have friends over because she did not like to have non family members in the home. She moved into the dining room so we had to phsyically go around her, and thus she was also more centrally getting attention. She hated life and gradually killed herself through not taking sufficient care of herself. She repeatedly told me that she wished I had never been born, and informed me that if I didn't tow the line which she would lay down, that I should no longer consider myself her son. I was unable to make peace with her while she was alive. I can only begin to forgive now because I know she can no longer hurt me.

My mom has always had mood swings since she was a teen. It was a psychiatrist who diagnosed her when I was very young. She was able to get that changed several times while I was growing up. I remember her starting to have bad episodes starting in when I was in 6th grade. She threatened to kill herself after being on a manic high. My parents were separated And I think that is why my dad came back. She was hospitalized for suicidal thoughts for a week. Things just got worse from there. Every two years, she would have a cycle. I was the oldest so I felt responsible for everything. I think that is why I have so many problems now. Once, she left my brother in the desert for 2 hrs without any food or water. Another time she thought she was a spy in the military. The last time she was arrested for test driving a car over state lines overnight. When they arrested her, she told the judge that she would blow up the building. This wasn't new - She had also threatened to kill my father in the past- she described how she would do it to my younger sister. It was very violent. After she threatened to blow up the court house she got in a fight with a guard and her arm was broken She was then sent to a state hospital for a year. This has worked for the past 7 years. Zyprexa is the only thing that works for her. I hope it continues to as we have a great relationship now and she is a wonderful grandmother to my daughter.

its mostly my father whos mentally ill. He wanders the streets of my neighberhood calling himself some sort of religious figure. he dresses in rags and never takes showers. This sort of think is an unimaginable embarrassment for someone so my mother even more so then myself withdrew into some sort of dark deep mental cave. She rarely ever leaves her house though she is still married to him. I got away from there when i was quite young but i was still living in that community though im not anymore. sick.
