Refugees

The last few days have seen an enormous amount of refugees arriving in Munich from Hungary and other EU Countries. The main railway station is flooded but surprisingly the number of residents bringing, drinking water, baby food and nappies is so overwhelming that the police have asked them to stop as they have more than enough.

Re: Refugees

Donald, I don't know where this is all going to end. I don't know enough about politics to understand how and why the refugee situation began. I see every night on TV hundreds of people - families and children, young and old all rushing to get onto whatever mode of transport will take them to Europe. You know the risks they have taken and the deaths that have ensued. WHY? Whatever they're fleeing from must be terrible. I feel so very sorry for these people, trying to cope without a roof over their heads and no-one seeming to really want them. I don't know what the answer is. Can anyone explain?

so many young fit men why not join their countries armies instead of risking thousands of lives of men women and children on death trap boats

or is it an engineered invasion of europe by muslims

Re: Refugees

Come on, Barney. I can't believe you would think such a thing. When I see the pictures of those desperate people fleeing from something so terrible, that they are willing to risk their lives, it frightens me. What has the world come to. All this reminds me of a plague, only a plague of frightened people. God help them, that's all I can say. The thing is that those who are interviewed on TV are ordinary people like ourselves. Only difference is that they are homeless. Put yourself in their situation and think what it would be like, how you would feel and what you would do to escape from some persecution or other. I hope this whole refugee crisis is solved soon. The whole thing is so sad, especially when I see the small children and babies and mothers scrambling for safety. Who couldn't be moved?

Re: Refugees

in this day of techknowledgy with easy access to anyone anywhere in the world to communicate en mass world wide anything is possible, hundred of thousands of young fit men as can be seen on newsreels all intent on reaching europe who could well have joined the armies of their homeland and serve their country in fight against the likes of isis, thats my opinion anyway, they now causing riots in their desperation to get resettled,in the iran iraq wars syria took in 2/4 million people as refugees, its just my opinion that muslims will eventually rule europe, and plans have been passed for a massive mosque in dublin, just how many isis are among those refugees i wonder

Re: Refugees

Barney you are right, and Ann you are right also! It is an impossible situation, God help us all.

Re: Refugees

Barney..you are SO right.
Ann..no good deed goes unpunished.

Re: Refugees

Barney

The situation in the Middle East is not so very different to that in Ireland, though on a much larger scale. Religious and cultural disagreements end in conflict. People flee from war and poverty, and seek a better life elsewhere. I am totally opposd to IS, but I have no doubt they see themselves as the IRA of the Islamic world, and feel fully justified in their endeavour to introduce an Islamic State with Sharia Law throughout the Arab world.

That the elderly, the mothers and children, are sacrificed in pursuit of their goal is of little consequence to them. After all, they will all meet in Paradise, isn't that so?

The answer? Is a terrible world war between Christianity and Islam inevitable?

Or will some inconspicuous little Jeremy Corbyn arise and leave an indelible mark on history? Will he convince us all that pacificistic Socialism, unhindered by the so-called Free Market or by superstitious religious philosophy can save our future? With what little fight that's left in my old bones, I long for the latter.

Re: Refugees

Al, 'no good deed goes unpunished' is an Americanism. I cannot come to grips with this saying and only heard it spoken on Judge Judy. Makes no sense to me.

Re: Refugees

Dabbler, 3 cheers for Jeremy Corbyn. I know little about politics but I like this man because he's so different. He doesn't do the walk, he doesn't do the talk and he doesn't dress to please either. He's refreshing. I think he also knows his business.

Re: Refugees

I can but hope that this unassuming man, who has resurrected in me the embers of a philosophy that I had all but rejected, can do the same for all the fine people in this wealthy country. When I learned long ago that the highly principled Anthony Wedgwood-Benn had given up his family heritage to follow a career in politics as the 'common man', Tony Benn, I was hooked on Socialism. That he failed to convince the majority to dispose of nuclear weapons convinced me that we were doomed to a belief that Great Britain can be Great only as a Nuclear Power. That many smaller nations in Europe were treated with equal respect and were not invaded seemed to be outside the scope of the majority.
Along with Jeremy Corbyn, I am prepared to strike out again for the common people. The cost of maintaining the Trident Missile would comfortably feed the nation.

Re: Refugees

Just heard on the News that the German Government quickly passed a law permitting refugees from Syria to stay in the Vaterland for 3 years without having Refugee status but they are not permitted to bring their families here.

Re: Refugees

Barney, Ann & all,

Time will tell the tale, it takes time to see the "Big picture".

It takes money to get a place on one of those boats too, big money. Where are the poor.?

We learn nothing from history, it has all happened before Syria.

MANS INHUMANITY TO MAN. Pat

Re: Refugees

Ann, "no good deed..." is hardly an Americanism..it a quote attributed to Oscar Wilde.
I believe he was born in Dublin.
It roughly means that when one does a good deed it is often not appreciated and can lead to hostility with the expectation of more.
Didn't realize Judge Judy had such an appreciation for literature??
Al

Re: Refugees

Al, I'm splitting hairs here but 'attributed' isn't the same as definite, ie. Oscar Wilde is ATTRIBUTED as quoting "No good deed" but it doesn't say it was DEFINITELY one of his quotes. It doesn't sound like an Oscar Wilde quote. Anyhow, I personally feel that if one carries out a good deed for the right reason, that person will be rewarded in one way or another. Karma.

Re: Refugees

Pat
Do you KNOW that these people pay a lot of money for the 'privilege' of boarding these boats? I think if I were an attractive woman faced with the strong possibility of watching my children killed, I might think of a way to help them escape. Are these refugees to be met by the same attitude from indigenous inhabitants as the Irish and West Indians in days gone by? Barney;s quote "No blacks, no Irish, no dogs" was a shameful reality.

Re: Refugees

Dabs,

That's the way of the World.

When we left the North & relocated to Dublin later, where the work was plentiful, we went to an Estate Agent in Dawson St. in Dublin, to rent a house for a year, the fat cat behind the desk said, when we spoke, "Oh you are refugees from the North"!!!

I looked at him with loathing as he was not an Irishman himself but had the audacity to judge us.

I have never forgotten that remark or that fat cat. Pat

Re: Refugees

Pat
We are all human beings. As a caring atheist, I am able to forgive the nastiest insults that have been directed at me. But not every human is as lucky as I.

Re: Refugees

Dabs,

I consider myself imperious to such people. He actually was the refugee, being outcast from Germany, but had evidently forgotten his history.

However he did find us a house, which we later bought, in a small, no through road, estate in Dublin & where our youngest son lives now.

Sometimes it is better to remain silent, forgive but don't forget.

Pat

Re: Refugees

Pat
it´s possible that your "fat cat" used the wrong translation for "Flüchtling". In German it can be interpreted as "Refugee", "Fugitive" or "Runaway".

Re: Refugees

Dabs,

As in arrogant, impervious might have been better. Only you could query! Might have known we have an old smart warrior still.

Donald,

His Mother tongue was Jewish.

Re: Refugees

The one Country that should be ashamed of itself is Hungary. its incredible the attitude of their Government putting a wire barricade up to keep the refugees out, they have a short memory as back in 1956 thousands of them were fleeing their country when the communists were taking over I know Canada opened its doors them, I had just arrived in Vancouver from Australia and it was headlines in the papers at the time. Mauri

Re: Refugees

Donald, you're off gallivanting again. I'm only jealous and will be thinking of you swigging down the beer in the sun. Enjoy.

Re: Refugees

Thank you Pat. Even 'impervious', though better, would not be strictly speaking, grammatically correct. You may be impervious to their insults rather than to them. Are we still referring to refugees? Yes, Pat. I'm not sure that I am much of a warrior,, but I do like to get things right. A few evenings ago I attended a fringe meeting of the Labour conference here in Brighton. Diane Abbott was one of the speakers, and, as on TV, seemed to know her stuff. I mention this as an indication that I like to listen to knowledgeable people, whether or not I agree with their opinions. Actually, before the meeting, I had a minor disagreement with a young journalist, so that would justify your 'warrior' view.
