Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Hi, Brendan, I'm not trying to be a smart Alec, but the picture to which you are referring does not include Jim keery. The second from left is Jackie Briers.

The line-up is Jim spider Kelly, Jackie Briers, Tommy McMenamy, Bunty Doran, Gerry Smyth and Freddy Webb.

Thanks

Brian

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Re: Keery/Joe Sharpe

Brendan, I was just wondering if you would have a photo of Joe Sharpe, brother of Peter (Al) Sharpe. I have just completed Peter's story. He had 121 fights, and is the only Irishman to have won three Northern Ireland titles - light, welter and middle - at different weights. Gerry Smyth died recently and there was a massive turnout. Needless to say his fights with Jim Keery were mentioned in a wonderful eulogy. I enjoyed reading your messages.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Brendan, did one of the Famechon family,Ray I think, come to visit Jim Keery in Lisburn,It was just as the Tonagh Estate was being built?Another Boxer was Alex Woods from Randlestown,We worked together at the Govt.Aircraft in Port Melbourne,in the early 60's, He was a great Yarn- Spinner. He used to tell of the time he Bred Salmon Terriers to retrieve Salmon from the Pools after he had stunned the Fish by spreading Flax Seed on the water. He was also a keen Photographer with his own Darkroom and many great Fight photos in his collection....Frank

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Iremember the famechon brothers 1 of them fought in Kings Hall Andre maybe,Ray beat Billy Kelly in euro title fight in Dublin the 3 brothers also visited Dublin for a Rosary crusade or Pioneer crusade, maybe some other crusade not sure now what it was though.
i remember Alex Woods heavyweight im sure he was,
back in Ulster Hall days
Wether any of the Famechons visited Isaac or not i could not say now,Stanley Orr would be the man to answer that one

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Hi, Barney, the boxer second from the right is Gerry smyth. I knew Gerry Smyth well. I was at his funeral. I intend to use this picture in my new book, so I contactd Paddy Graham, the former undefeated welterweight champion of Northern Ireland from the Markets in Belfast. I showed Paddy the picture and asked him did he know anyone in the picture. He just smiled and, without hesitation, said, 'Jim spider Kelly, Jackie Briers, Tommy McMenamy, Bunty Doran, Gerry Smyth and Freddie Webb.'

BUNTY ADAMSON ALSO USED TO COME TO THE QUAY FOR SPARS AROUND THAT TIME ALSO,IF ONLY STANLEY ORR OR BOBBY GRAHAM OR EVEN ERNIE GRAHAM WERE ON LINE HERE THEY COULD VERIFY WHAT I SAY

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

This is good craic. I enjoy reading about the old boxers, Surely Stanley Orr isn't still around? He would be in his eighties.
I'm sure I have asked previously, but did any of you know Jim Russell. He was a good scrapper. He boxed professionally, I can't remember his ring name. He was nearer to my dad's age than mine. I don't know how many fights he had, but he was boxing around the same time as Garnett Denny.

For football fans - I'll be at the Arsenal game tomorrow.

Goodnight, and may your gods go with you.

Barney, I am not a betting woman, but if I was, I would put my money on your opinion!

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Alan, Jim Wiseman married Helen Morrow (Beano would know her) sister of Bert Morrow the well known jockey from Lisburn. Helen and Jim live near me. I'll give him your regards. Margaret

I remember Bertie well he also boxed,he was a mechenic in one of the linen mills maybe stewarts mill,he rode a good chaser Galloway Braes among others,he won the 1953 King George chase at kempton park on that horse,Bertie rode for Alec Kilpatrick in those days

I remember him singing one night at a party may have been in the Quay Club,he sang The Little Shirt My Mother Made For Me

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Looks like nobody new Jim Russell. I remember Bertie Morrow, and I backed Galloway Braes in that race.
Among Jim Keery's opponents, I note Paddy Dowdall. I think Paddy ran the gym in Vauxhall motors in Luton during the seventies.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

A Lurgan fighter, Kid Seeley, went the distance with Jim Keery.

I may have written this story in the past, but I repeat it, just in case any of my siblings or their children might be interested:
My dad once told me that Seeley was offering to take on allcomers, and anyone going three rounds with him would get a cash prize. Our da, so he told me, with encouragement from a couple of drunken mates, volunteered. He said that Seeley 'held him up' for the three rounds, and I think, let him win the cash. Anyway, as a young lad, I loved the story. Still do.

Looks like you would have lost your money Liz,but pending an obj you might get it back

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Barney
Jim Russell did knock about with Lewis, and, as I have written somewhere, on at least one occasion, knocked him about. I am not certain about him boxing professionally, but a niggling memory says he did, under a false name. He was certainly far too good for Tommy Lewis in a street fight, even though he fought fairly, using his fists, and Tommy tried every dirty trick in the book.
Thanks for troubling to reply.
If I ever need a solicitor to help me get compensation for personal injuries, I'll use that one you recommend.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Thanks, Barney.
I remember Johnny Owen very well. That is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen, on any subject.
Johnny put a lot more into life, and got more out of it, in his twenty-four years than most of us do in seventy four. He was proud of his life while he lived it, and his family are still, rightfully, proud of him now.
No education, no handsome looks, or big muscles, but what a man!

Hi
Seen this while searching for a picture of stanley orr. To answer your question stanley is still very much alive but in his 90s. Currently living in an old people's home. He is my grandads uncle and my wee brother is now carrying on the family tradition and has been boxing in to nah boxing club for a number of years now. My uncle Wesley orr who stanley coach is always over at the club cheering on team orr.

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

hi christina jim keerys son jack keery is on facebook

Re: Jim Keery (Isaac)

Christina,

I am pleased to hear that Stanley is still alive. I spent little time at his gym, and would not have registered in his memory, but he certainly did in mine.A tough member of a tough family. I also recall Alan or Aaron, who shot a water pistol at me in Market Square. My younger brother thumped him for doing that, and unsurprisingly lost the fight that followed. Now dead, that young brother is remembered by me with pride; Alan/Aaron would understand.
