Re: February Observances

A friend of mine posted a message about Ida B. wells. She said she viewed a Long Island PBS station presentation that aired an important documentary about her life. She was a journalist, forcing the country to face the heinous practice of lynching black men as a tool of maintaining white supremacy. However, there is so much more to know about her. She was a founder of many social and political organizations. Her sympathies, unlike the black elite in Chicago, was with the poor, many of whom had migrated from the south. Her story will sharpen your awareness of the class divisions in the Black community. At the same time she organized Black women to fight for suffrage. She saw the vote as an essential tool to bring about the end of Jim Crow and everyday racism. I found that there is an Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative ReportingSchool of Journalism and Media in North Carolina. If you want to learn more about her, you can watch the documentary on PBS, Ida B.
