Shoppers splashed out an estimated £1million a minute today in a frenzy of Christmas Eve panic-buying.

Major retailers reported brisk business both on high streets and online as people made a flurry of last-minute purchases

Supermarkets were also packed with people stocking up on festive food.

It was estimated that more than 13million people would make a late dash to the shops today.

Upon reading this my reaction was "No sign of recession there" But how many are plundering their savings accounts or taking credit out at up to 25% interest just to keep up with the Jones? Like I said in an earlier posting here, 50 years ago when Christmas was one of the few times in year when we could eat drink and be merry perhaps understandable but if it is justified today where almost anything can be bought all year? Maybe I,m too old fashonied.
Reading this brought back memories of the Christmas clubs some of our parents started to pay into around July so we could have a half decent Xmas. If they were still around what would they think?
