Prince Aleksandar wants Serbia a kingdom
BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro, May 24 (UPI) --
Crown Prince Aleksandar asked Wednesday for the restoration of monarchy in Serbia, three days after Montenegro voted independence from their federation. Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, a son of Yugoslav King Peter II who died in exile, said Serbs and Montenegrins will always be brothers, regardless of whether they live in one or two states. "Kingdom of Serbia will provide the fastest way to the European Union and will attract new foreign investments, help economic development, ensure employment and social welfare," the prince said on Belgrade's B92 radio. "We must not waste time any more, Serbia must go forward." Prince Aleksandar was born in London in 1945, where his father found a shelter after fleeing the country following Nazi Germany's occupation in 1941. After World War II in 1945, Marshal Josip Broz Tito's communist regime banned the royal family from returning to Yugoslavia. Members of the Karadjordjevic family returned to Serbia in the 1990s during the rule of the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic.
