Tyler Hansbrough scored 13 points in his season debut Friday and top-ranked North Carolina fought off UC-Santa Barbara 84-67.

Hansbrough, last season's player of the year in major college basketball, missed the Tar Heels' opening two games with a stress reaction condition in his right shin. He had not missed a game during his first three years at North Carolina.

He started and played 25 minutes Friday while making just two of eight shots from the field. But he was good on all but one of his 10 free throw attempts and claimed seven rebounds.

Ty Lawson led North Carolina (3-0) with 19 points and Wayne Ellington had 17.

James Nunnally had 22 for the Gauchos (1-2).

The Tar Heels owned an eight-point lead at the half and did not permanently extend their lead to double digits until less than 6 minutes remained.
