IRA explosives may still be out there

BELFAST, Northern Ireland, Aug. 19 (UPI) --

A rocket attack on police officers in Northern Ireland last weekend appears to have used plastic explosives from old IRA ordnance stocks, police say.

The Irish Republican Army agreed to decommission its arms as part of the peace process. But the recent discovery suggests that at least part of its armory ended up in the hands of dissident groups, The Times of London reported.

Groups such as the Real IRA are believed to have no more than 80 to 100 members total, only a few of them experienced IRA veterans. They may have another 250 to 300 supporters.

The most recent attack occurred in Lisnakeas in County Fermanagh, on the border with the Republic of Ireland at about 11 p.m. Saturday. A homemade rocket-launcher was used to fire explosives at three police officers but the charge failed to detonate.

The IRA acquired quantities of the plastic explosive Semtex in the late 1980s from Libya.
