Buyer of fish poison sought hit man

ROCKFORD, Ill., July 2 (UPI) --

A federal complaint says a suburban Chicago man arrested for trying to purchase a deadly fish toxin once trolled the Internet looking for a hit man.

Edward F. Bachner IV, 35, is alleged to have suggested he would pay $8,000 for the "permanent retirement" of an unidentified woman, The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

Bachner was arrested by federal agents after he posed as a researcher to buy large quantities of pufferfish toxin.

The complaint against him filed in U.S. District Court in Rockford does not link his purchase of the toxin with the alleged murder-for-hire plot.

Federal agents found six empty vials of the neurotoxin TTX along with needles and syringes when they searched Bachner's home in suburban Lake in the Hills.

Records show Bachner and his wife, Rebecca, have faced foreclosure twice since they purchased their Lake in the Hills home in 2003.

Bachner could receive up to 10 years in prison if convicted of possessing TTX without a permit.
