Lisburn Exiles Forum

(Site is no longer operational pending a major long overdue overhaul of the entire website. Thank you for your patience. Site should still be visible and searchable for old posts.)

The Lisburn Exiles Forum is dedicated to the memory of James Goddard Collins (The Boss) who single-handedly built LISBURN.COM (with a lot of help from many contributors) from 1996 to 29th November 2012. This website was his passion and helping people with a common interest in the City of Lisburn around the world is his lasting legacy.

Photographs - old and new

Hi,

As you all know LISBURN.COM has hidden depths. One rich area is the old photographs on the site e.g. http://lisburn.com/Photographs/lisburn_old_photographs.html.

I came across a site a year ago that shows photos of Dublin, old and new, in an interesting way - http://www.photography.paul-walsh.net/landscape/Cushman/. As your mouse hovers over the old image, a recent photograph appears. You can quickly flick between them by moving your mouse.

I had planned to help my dad do something similar on the site. So I wanted to ask if anyone was interested to help me take some current photos, from exactly the same spot as an old photo (or near as possible), so I can build something like this? To me this is a perfect feature for the site - there are bound to be people all over the world that would be interested to see the before and after photos.

I have no timescale for this, but it strikes me as a good summer community project. If I have some helpers, I'll parcel out bunches of old photos to people and get them to do their bit.

Let me know what you think of this idea, and if you have some time in the next 6 months to help make it happen.

Re: Photographs - old and new

There may already be some new ones on the site as I know Tommy McKay kindly went round Lisburn one day for me and took loads of pictures
so I could see what it is like now. I was very grateful and I am sure lots of others have enjoyed the updated photos too.

Though I look at all the site through the eyes of an uneducated nostalgic old ex-Lisburn man, I catch an occasional glimpse of something special, in a world almost lost to me in my ignorance. Your link to Cushman's photographs afforded me such a glimpse. Thanks.

Re: Photographs - old and new

Thanks Joe. Those Dublin photos were very evocative. With the number of great photos on this site, shouldn't be too hard to make more of them! Just need to figure out where they all are and what to do with them! Here's an early test, nothing new on the page (apart from the lack of left and right margins) but it's good to see several photos of Seymour Street all on one page. http://www.lisburn.com/dctest/dctestmenu.html

I remember learning, many moons ago, that Dublin's O'Connell Street was the widest in Europe, and I remember sticking out my pigeon chest as if I owned it.

Here's another great example of using old and new photographs. http://www.rue89.com/rue89-culture/2013/03/24/paris-1914-2013-en-photos-grimpez-dans-notre-fabuleuse-machine-remonter-le Very inspiring!
