Fish and Chips

I originally came to this site looking for Genesis and Fuscos, fish and chip shops. Still miss the taste of the fish supper.

Re: Fish and Chips

Regretfully none of these family's are in the business any more ,though Dominic is still around the town and I think Maureen is still about, you may remember Victor (RIP) his son still runs the long established family business in Ballinahinch

Re: Fish and Chips

OK..on the right, side of the "Low Road",
across from the girls school, who had the
little fish and chip and other stuff..meat pies
shop.
It was lit by gas lights and always "take away".
I can still see the gas light glow and smell the cooking. (grease, probably Lard..now good.)
High counter on left when you walked in.
Can anyone remember???
Allen.

Re: Fish and Chips

i'm surprised the font of all things lisburn herr watters hasn't jumped in on this one. the chippie you are talking about belonged to bob duncan who lived in flat below us in lawnbrook drive.

Re: Fish and Chips

Herr Lowercase
Duncan did not own it, his father in law who owned one of the two shops on the corner a little further up ( Wilson St ?)owned it. Bob Duncan worked in it part time. I remember that Bob Duncan, who had massive arms worked as a driver for a foundry on the Govornor Road Belfast in Belfast and at the Twelfth played a Lambeg Drum.Someone mentioned here some time ago the shop had a nickname but I cannot remember it.

your (know all ) big brother donald

Re: Fish and Chips

During the war this chip shop was owned by Millars , who also owned the shop on the corner of Wilson St then the daughter got married and her and the husband ran it up to the 50s,there best years would have been when the army was stationed opposite in Forthill !

Re: Fish and Chips

Donald if i can remember right it was called spit in the pan

Re: Fish and Chips

Miller's was the chip shop facing Forthill School. My aunts bought fish and chips every Friday night. You had to order the fish in advance. It wasn't a great chip shop but served the Low Road people. The best fish and chips were Montgomerys. Fresh cod, pure white, and delicious light batter. Their ice cream parlour was delightful too. I remember all the bowls of assorted jellies red green, yellow and orange. Then the dishes of sprinkles for the ice cream. Chocolate, hundred and thousands, coconut and more than I can remember. The sauces were. Gorgeous too. My favourite was butterscotch. It was a quaint, spotlessly clean shop and I've never come across another to beat it.

Re: Fish and Chips

Hi Ann,

I agree with your choice of ice cream shops as far as selection is concerned. For me the best ice cream was "Kitty Malloy's", if you had walked another 150 yards from Montgomery's you would have had the best fish and chips in town and that was Ginesis.....only my opinion of course.

Re: Fish and Chips

Beano, of course Kitty Molloys was the best ice cream. It was renowned in the town. But Montgomers ice cream parlour was unique. I still put Montgomerys chips and fish in the lead and I tasted both. It's individual taste and all the chip shops did well

Re: Fish and Chips

Re: Fish and Chips

Where was Montgomery's ?,

Re: Fish and Chips

Facing the old Co-Op on Castle St

Re: Fish and Chips

Surprised nobody has mentioned Collins Fish and Chips on Tonagh Park, not sure when it opened would be sometime in the 50s when the two houses at the corner of Tonagh Park and Longstone were taken over by Isaac Collins who had the grocery store next to them. I know when I started coming home a couple of times a year in the early 60s,my Aunt would sometimes get a couple of fish suppers and they were good, later on I believe it expanded into a pretty good sized restaurant, often wondered what happened to it?? Re: Fish and Chips

Hello Mr.McKay.

No hard feelings, it would take a lot more than that to annoy me after all the years we have known each other.

I am very sorry we didn't get together at home, I forgot my little phone book,as well I was in no great shape to socialise. Things have improved slightly, I get around with the aid of a cane and sometimes a walker, so it could be worse

We hope you are both keeping well, give our love to Evelyn.

(I must state that there is no personal position concerned with this post)

Re: Fish and Chips

Remember,

Fish & chips.!!! Every Friday the order was a Supper for everyone, but we all went to the nearest one , Millars owned it, called the Antique. One fella always called it the Ant-I Q. So we all called it that from then on till it closed.

You had to Wait in Millars, it was always packed, probably because it was very small & the service was relaxed & slow, but the food was good IF you were lucky enough to get fish, which seemed to be always scarce.

Later a good one opened in Lambeg & everyone went there, where the service was excellent & the portions good, wonder is it still there.? If in town we went to Genisi's, as my Mother was friendly with Joe & always had a yarn with him as we sat upstairs for a treat with tea & bread & butter. Thought we were great.

Sometimes we had Montgomery's when at the Tech. they had good fare too, can taste all the different ones yet, my mouth is watering so will put the dinner on before it is too late.

No chips tonight though, ham & chicken with spuds & veg.........Pat

Re: Fish and Chips

Pat I wonder was that Jonnie Hunts in Lambeg? I never did taste his Fish and Chips but he always got a good reputation , regarding Millers, they bought very little fish really in comparison maybe a Stone of fish at the most Ginesis's was one of the biggest in Nr Ireland during the war years as I believe he had a permit for the most dripping at that period Regards Ted
