Re: Lisburn Exiles

on the subject of francey lunn I'm surprised the hilden oracle & font of all knowledge hasn't replied to your query as we both knew him well. as to his present whereabouts I wish you luck as I haven't heard of him in many years.

Herr lowercase,
I remember the Lunn family, they lived beside Jimmy Hughes the lamp lighter facing the girls entrance to Hilden school. The family were related to the Weir family who lived a few doors down. Now I have a question for you. Did you know the family were also distantly related to us through marriage? Get your thinking cap on and solve that one.

the font of all knowledge

Your answers are amusing. Wish I knew who you are.

Re: Lisburn Exiles

Donald, Is that relationship with the Lunn family through Murial Bradley? If so it just happens that Murial is a second cousin of mine. So does that mean yourself and Eamon Lowercase are related to me??????I think that old saying about, if we go back far enough we are all related to each other. To get back to the original reason for this post. I think the Lunn family moved to Luton about 1960. There was a post here a long time ago from Frazer Wilson, maybe he will come on and let us know if he ever found Francie Lunn and his wife Sally. Cheers Pam

Re: Lisburn Exiles

I once saw Esme Davis in Luton, a very long time ago. I don't know why I didn't introduce myself as the cage boy from Stewart's. I didn't know anything about Esme except that she worked in the spinning room.
Can you believe that these amazing comments will not go on another ten years?

Our Hilden was founded by the Huguenots arriving there from France after a brief stay in Hilden in the Vaterland.

I remember about 20 years ago sitting in an Augustiner Biergarten here and got into conversation with another guest. Noting his accent was not Bavarian I asked him where he came from. He replied "Hilden"! I answered "Me as well"!, It turned out his father was the Lord Mayor from Hilden in Mettmann Germany and I put him in touch with Ivan Davis then Mayor. A group visited Hilden brewery and a photo of the visit hangs or hung there.
Once when attending a trade union meeting in North Germany I made a diversion and stopped in Hilden there for a walk around

Two non-academic questions:
I once wrote, a very long time ago, to a woman in Gregg Street, Lisburn, Co. Down. Would that letter have got there?
Jazus, I've forgotten the second question!

Re: Lisburn Exiles

Donald, I re-read your knowledgable comments, and remembered my question. You could not be certain of course, but is it possible that the Ivan Davis you mention could have been at the toss in 'The Hollow', where he attempted to stop a fight?
That was in the mid fifties, and a man called Ivan Davis acted as I have described. My memory of those long ago traumatic events is still clear. I remember who was kicking whom, and I remember who told me that 'pacifier's' name.

it depends upon if you put a postage stamp on it!
The postal address of Lisburn was and still is Co. Antrim, but Gregg St. similar to Tullynacross ( to us Hildeners = TULLYNABUCK) lies on the Co. Down side. Similar to herself´s address before we married, it was Magheralin , Lurgan Co. Armagh despite Magheralin being in Co. Down.
My relation Pamela will confirm this.

Received an offer yesterday per e Mail for a holiday in Zams in Tyrol Austria, a hotel on the mountain summit with free Cable car transport, entrance to the local museums and sport facilitates B&B €40 per person per night but am wondering if it is a scam as they say you pay when you arrive but you must leave your Visa card details as security!

Re: Lisburn Exiles

Thanks Donald.
I wouldn't chance that holiday offer, if I were you.
I like the stamp bit - old Lisburn.

Re: Lisburn Exiles

Dabbler,

I knew Ivan Davis personally, he will be 79 this year, I can assure you he wasn't at any pitch and toss. Ivan is very religious.

Beano

Re: Lisburn Exiles

Thanks Beano. I didn't know the Ivan Davis at the toss. I was informed that he was a good scrapper, but on this occasion he wisely stepped back when told to do so by one of Lisburn's hardest Teddy Boys, who continued to kick his unconscious opponent.

Re: Lisburn Exiles

Ivan Davis sent his chauffeur when I was staying in Lisburn almost 20 years ago to bring me a present of a neck-tie with the Lisburn emblem upon it as a token of appreciation for bringing him into contact with the Lord Mayor of Hilden Germany. Another time ( 1986 ) I was also given on at the Hamburg Trade Union Conference by Johannes Rau who later was to become President of Germany with the Social Party Germany emblem. Both hang in my wardrobe as I now only wear such an item of clothing at funerals which is happening more often. At the last yearly meeting of the local Ex Soldiers and Comrades Association of which I have been a member now almost 40 years I was asked if I would be prepared to act as Standard bearer at such events but I declined because from my figure I could be taken for a Bavarian but when I open my gob my norniron accent would give my origan away.
