Things my mammy told me

Hi all

My mum told me about the day a wireless was brought into the family home. It was a day of celebration. She said the children all danced to the music and granny sat grinning and clapping her hands. Life was never again the same!

Any similar memories?

Tweet tweet, the memories you gave me.

Re: Things my mammy told me

Hi Liz .

We had a valve set wireless in the corner , beside the fireplace , in a cupboard . Every night at 6. 45 , the MC COOEY'S , OR Dick Barton Special Agent and Snowey. My brother bought a record table and attached it to the radio , and you dare not touch it , only himself . But the music was good and we all enjoyed it . Simple pleasures of bygone day's .

All best wishes to all .

My mammy told me that chewing gum had maggots in it and when you threw it on fire and it sizzled she used to declare: "There, you see, that's the maggots frying! And you had that in your mouth!"

Re: Things my mammy told me

My mammy told me that I was "the star of the County Down", and I believed her.

Later on when I heard that song, I used to say to anyone I was with. "See, that song is about me". I truly believed the song writer wrote it about me. Now when I hear it (not very often these days) I just smile.

Re: Things my mammy told me

I’m more or less pleased at how things turned out
I’m neither too rich nor too poor
But I wish I could still hear my old mother’s shout
As she called me from outside our door
I’m too sentimental, but sure that’s no sin
When I think of those days long ago
With drums tied with string, we created a din
As we marched o’er the green, to and fro
Young Jimmy, with snot hanging down from his nose
He led us like troops off to war
While wee Lizzie, with both cheeks as red as the rose
Had knobbly knees covered in tar
I wonder if Jimmy’s nose still drips like a spout
And if Lizzie keeps her knees off the floor
Going back, would I still hear my old mother’s shout
As she calls me from outside our door?

Dabbler,

I couldn't follow that, you have a great way of expressing yourself in prose. Brendan Behan eat your heart out.
