Old country people,s wise sayings

How about putting to paper ( PC ) old wise sayings we remember. I,ll start being me a wise old countryman!
1 It takes a wise man to act the fool.
2 You never miss the water till the well runs dry.
3 A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
4 Never sell your hay on a rainy day.

Re: Old country people,s wise sayings

I'm trying to think of some Donald.........
What about...A whistling maid and a crowing hen
will drive the devil out of his den???

or even .....never cast a clout 'till may is out???

or...........If the wind changes you'll stay like that

Re: Re: Re: Old country people,s wise sayings

Hiya I was talking to an Irish lady today from Sandy Row originally and she came out with one of my granny's oul sayings.
If something wasn't too clean or had fallen on the floor before you could eat it she'd say
Ate it up...clean mate never fattened a pig"

Re: Old country people,s wise sayings

Hi Maureen, I remember that one well, and still use it myself. Another one my mum often said was " the less you say, the more the better". I often tell myself that one!

Re: Old country people,s wise sayings

My Granny said
" A wise old owl lived in an oak,
the more he saw the less he spoke, the less he spoke, the more he heard,
now wasn,t he a wise old bird?

Happy twelfth everybody

REPEAT POST
It’s a long lane there’s no turn in.

Meaning: Things may be going badly, but they can’t last forever.
That one from my old ma; and boy, did she know about things going badly.

Re: Re: Old country people,s wise sayings

My granny use to say to me(when I was particularly dirty and lost looking)
"you're standing there like one of Liptons orphans"
Has anyone any idea who Lipton was? (apart from the one who had the grocery shop)
