just found out i have PC

went for a complete physical and had PSA of 10.6 scheduled at visit with Uroligist for an exam. this was 11-3-2013, scheduled a biopsy in the office. what a fun time, results came as cancer. Dr. sent be for a bone scan and ct scan. bone scan came back negative, meeting with Dr. to discuss next move. i have had some other health issues been dealing worth for the past 15 years and have not had a complete physical with blood work since 1998. i retired in june 2012, i am 64 now. decided after working same job for 43 years to get in shape, not obese but carrying about 20 lbs extra. went to a fitness center in august 2012 after working about 5 times a week for 4 months not seeing any results. talked to some of the guys at gym, most younger than me suggested i get my testorone checked. went to GP and got blood tested and real low T, started shots once a month which helped about for 2 weeks. i was tested every 3 months before continuing regiment after 6 months my levels were coming up but still to low. did blood work and was put on 2 week shots. i felt so much better and over the course of working out i lost over 20 lbs and was putting muscle and getting stronger. evidently when they did blood work they did not test my PSA. what i am wondering is since i have not used T shots since end of october should i have my PSA checked again like every 3 months to baseline instead of just jumping into surgery. without a baseline can the doctor tell from PSA level and gleason score from the one test how aggressive the cancer is? my wife is pushing to just have it removed as soon as possible. one other thing is i had no symptons of prostate troubles before my physical. no ED, pain or urinary problems. wondering why they did not check PSA level before taking the T shots?

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but welcome to the club you never wanted to join, Al.

You say went for a complete physical and had PSA of 10.6 scheduled at visit with Uroligist for an exam. this was 11-3-2013, scheduled a biopsy in the office. what a fun time, results came as cancer. Dr. sent be for a bone scan and ct scan. bone scan came back negative, meeting with Dr. to discuss next move.

There is not enought information for anyone to give you and guidance as to what might be best for you - and it would be difficult for you to understand what your doctor will be talking about.

Can I suggest you go to A Strange Place and download ro read through the booklet. This will give you a deal of background information. You will see that the important issues are the Gleason Score, the number of positive needles in the biopsy, the record of PSA results. I realise you don't have the latter data, but you will need the first two because they are the basis of any decision making.

Good luck

Re: just found out i have PC

Have you had a biopsy yet? What did it say? And what stage? What is your Gleason score? Until you know that it's hard to know anything.

I started T shots in October of 2012 because of a deep depression. By September of 2013 I had a lump. The biopsy showed the right side involved. I was stage T2b with a Gleason score of 8 (4+4).

I had robotic surgery 6 days ago and am stunned at how easy recovery has been. While cancer was only 16% involved there may have been a breach but lymph nodes and seminal vesicles were negative, a very good sign!

My doctor, from City of Hope in SoCal told me NOT to beat myself up about the T shots. It may have done a favor showing itself because the cancer was already there.

Get another opinion. Read MANY books. It's your body.
