Starting with Eligard (with or without anti-antrogen)

My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer a month ago. He is 44, his PSA was 220, Gleason 7 (4+3), metastasis in regional lymph nodes and bones. His doctor suggests starting treatment with Eligard (injection for a month)without any anti-antrogens, which I read may cause flare. I found this website very helpful and I would appreciate any reply.

Re: Starting with Eligard (with or without anti-antrogen)

I'm sorry to learn of your husband's condition. Age 44 is indeed young for the extent of disease you describe. While I am not qualified to speak on the particular question you raise, I would offer the following advice: Please ensure you're seeking the counsel of an experienced medical oncologist (versus urologist or radiation oncologist). A medical oncologist is schooled in the range of treatment options available to your husband, whereas most urologists -- while well meaning -- just don't have the depth and background to authoritatively advise you.

I was diagnosed with PCa at a year younger than your husband, though mine was Gleason 6 and capsule contained. I chose proton beam therapy (radiation) as my first-line treatment.

Nara,

Sorry to hear about your husband. You are right to question why no anti androgen to prevent flair. Onncologist typically keep you on it for the duration of the cycle if you are doing intermittent ADT2. I agree with Scott. Find yourself a medical oncologist that specializes in prostate cancer. His Doc should have handed him off to an Oncologist.
