lupron versus firmagon

for the long term which is safer lupron of firmagon i read on pharmacy/youtube the irreversable side of firmagon dont undersrant it too tevhnical for me any ideas thanks john q

Re: lupron versus firmagon

I expect that Lupron is the one that is irreversible after some undefined period on the drug. That is because Lupron works by overstimulating the release of Gonadotropin Releasing factor, which exhausts the system into shutting down. There is plenty of discussion of testosterone being permanently depressed by this drug. I've seen no such comment on Firmagon. Firmagon works differently - it's an antagonist meaning it locks into the natural receptors preventing the cascade without stimulating the pituitary. No info on the reversal of this effect that I've found. Monthly abdominal injections of Firmagon were too hard on my husband so he went back to Lupron. This far into the treatment and after 5+ years of hormone deprivation there's no discussion of ever returning to anything resembling normal.
