psa elevation

just had a psa coming in at .89 , did the seed with radiation 2007 with RCOG, 2007 psa 9.9, 2008 1.09'
2010 .39; 2011 .46, 2012 .89

just got a posting from my RCOG support alumni group as follows:
>
> You should certainly be concerned, because your PSA is increasing, however, it is not increasing very fast (doubling time of about four years?), so if the increase is coming from cancerous tissue, it's not growing really fast. I would watch it carefully, and perhaps start thinking about what might be done if it keeps going up. There are some new imaging techniques being used that entail real time MRI that are being touted to be able to detect recurrence by showing vascularization better that Doppler Ultrasound
I welcome feedback from YANA regarding this elevation in PSA, Lookin forward to your responses, my local oncologist does not seem to be overly concerned. my best to you all, charlie

Charlie:
I have been wrestling with the same issue for the past year or so. I have documented my experience in an online journal; see http://protondon.blogspot.com/
Although there are some major differences in our situations, we may be able to learn from one another. My e-mail address is donandmar@yahoo.com

Re: psa elevation

Charlie,

I think it is important for you to be clear what your RCOG alumni group are saying .....IF the increase is coming from cancerous tissue ..... It is always important for men who have chosen radiation to remember that they have still have the remnants of a prostate gland - radiation does not destroy ALL prostate cells - so it is perfectly feasible that any PSA detected could come from these cells, since PSA is NOT prostate cancer specific.

The lack of concern you report from your oncologist may be because he has a better understadning of the potental limitations of the Ultra Sensitive PSA tests. One of our members, Mike C reports that his doctor, along with others in Canada no longer use Ultra Sensitve PSA tests because they create unwarranted anxiety in patients.

Good luck
