Medicare and Supplemental Insurance

I live in Florida and was diagnosed in September of 2010 as the result of a rising PSA and subsequent positive biopsy (3 samples of 21 positive). I decided to go with Proton therapy at UFPTI. I am currently in a holding pattern trying to figure out insurance. I am retired and on SSD and my wife is currently unemployed and we have an insurance policy from her former employer through COBRA. My current deductible is $10,000 so I would be responsible for that amount along with any other uncovered tests, etc that might be reqiured. I have heard that with MEDICARE and a MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTAL COVERAGE POLICY that there have been instances where the entire cost of the PROTON therapy has been covered in full in some cases there was a couple of thousand dollars out of pocket. My obvious question is, as I am currently awaiting my next birthday to be eligible for MEDICARE, WHICH or WHAT SUPPLEMENTAL PLAN POLICY(Company and or policy name) out there would afford TOTAL coverage for treatment? ANY and ALL suggestions and/or advice from someone that has had this experience would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
John

Re: Medicare and Supplemental Insurance

John: Medicare will cover 80% of your costs involved with your radiation or other services including hospitalization. Your wife's COBRA with a $10,000 total copay is extremely high, therefore, depending on your current health position, i.e., if you can wait until your next birthday, go with the supplemental plans through Blue Cross, A.A.R.P. (United Health Care), Humanna, and a host of others that are available. Once again if you have time, I would solicit their program information right now, as each program will explain the differences and monthly costs involved. Where I live, my monthly Blue Cross/Blue Shield premium is $161 which pretty much gives me 100% coverage minus my $15-$20 co-pays, including prescription drugs. I am not sure if you filed for total disability, you would be able to saddle up with a supplemental insurance because of the age. Not sure if this helps as states differ, or it may pay to seek an attorneys advice in your state. Usually other state programs are available that you can check on. Jack
