Things NOT to do before PSA?

Ok, no sex for at least 48 hours, no intense exercising, no bike riding, no coffee...did i forget anything? Yes Terry, I'm still here. My last color doppler was negative on October. I'm now scheduled for my 3 month PSA ck. The last reading was 4.7 with a negative DRE. Cheers...

Re: Things NOT to do before PSA?

Nice to see you Dave - and to hear that things are still gpig well - I'll use this as an update for your story, unless you send in more detail!

I'm a bit pushed for time right now - the extreme heat we have been having has made it difficult for me to do my work - and we have a guest and it was my birthday - but i should be able to get down to the updates next week.

I don't know if any of you people have read about the awful bushfires we have here in Victoria, Australia right now but they are really bad. The death toll is 49 and rising, at least 650 houses have gone and thousands of acres of trees, crops and pastureland.

Makes my health issues seem pretty minor.

All the best

Wish we could send you some of our 10" of rain this past week.

We from Southern California know all too well how bad fires can be and don't wish the experience on anyone. We wish you the BEST of luck Terry!! Any containment in sight?

Re: Things NOT to do before PSA?

Dave,

I know the often quoted rule for no sex before a PSA test is 48 hours but the Johns Hopkins Report and others say 72 hours.

Having sex within 72 hours of your PSA test can produce a false reading.

Re: Things NOT to do before PSA?

Geez...I've had about 6 PSAs and no one told me about the sex thing--including my present urologist. I've been chasing the reason for high (6-10)PSA for about 5 years. They finally found 1 core with 1mm of gleason 6 at PSA 10. I'm still recuperating from that biopsy and looking forward to seeing what the next PSA will be. I also found some contradictory views on whether or not bike riding should be discontinued. In the most rigorous study I found the data seemed to suggest that the higher your PSA was to begin with then the greater the increase will be. I am concerned about this because I have exercise biked for 20-30 min a day 7 days a week for about 30 years. I found a few companies making bike seats that don't have the anterior horn and will start using it before the next PSA. The makers of these seats claim that the old type seats can cause prostititis and ED.

Re: Things NOT to do before PSA?

Robert,

Whatever you find, there will be a contrarian view expressed elsewhere. The generally held view is that bike work - on a moving or stationery bike - should be avoided for at least 48 hours prior to a PSA test, as should sexual activity and virtually every other exercise that might increase pressure on your prostate gland and 'squeeze' a few more nanograms of PSA into the bloodstream.

It has always seemed strange to me that although my doctors, and the nurses at the blood draw, will always warn me and enquire if I have fasted before a cholestrol test, in none of the PSA tests (and I have had upward of 100 by now I think) has anyone ever mentioned the activities that can increase the outcome.

Incidentally, you might find PSA 101 useful.

All the best
