I just want to add I live in Denver Colorado

Re: Re: Free PSA Test

Hi Bill

read " A strange Place" I do not feel qualified to give advice on this site but my free psa was only 4% It seems to me to be a fairly accurate figure to use compared with the ordinary PSA one. If you are in low figures it is not good news.
Best of luck
David

Re: Free PSA Test

Bill, read Terry on PSA 101. I'm not familiar with US medical practice, but usually the free PSA test costs a little extra on top of the standard test. I think they may take a little extra vial of blood at the same time as the normal test. Yes, do INSIST on DRE but don't have the PSA test for at least several days after the DRE. A high free to total PSA figure expressed as a percentage is usually taken to be a good sign as long as all other indicators are good.

Your PSA could easily be elevated by the BPH issues and especially by having kidney stones and associated problems. The fact that you had the stones suggests that your BPH and associated urinary difficulites were quite severe, so the higher PSA would not be a major surprise in itself.

Re: Re: Free PSA Test

Hi! I just spoke to my urologist's nurse. She said they were not too concerned about my PSA rise due to the BPH problems and my age range (68). But she agreed to move my next appointment earlier. Again I want a DRE and a new PSA test with the free PSA test. And thanks to the last post I will delay the PSA test for a week after the DRE. Also no sex just before the PSA test. I can do without that for a few days. LOL. Bill

Bill, ... just draw the blood first, then do the DRE...Joe

Re: Re: Re: Free PSA Test

Bill- Yeah, no sex prior to PSA for at least 48 hours, no coffee, no exercising. For some good reading, read my story under the mentor section of this site. Good luck my friend. Dave

Re: Re: Re: Re: Free PSA Test

Hi Dave: Yes your story is very interesting. Considering your age I certainly think quick surgery would have been best for you. If I do indeed have cancer I am not sure what to think. I am 68 so I know that can make a difference. You wrote you live in Los Angeles County. I lived in the Pomona area for 31 years. Bill Langley
