Shy Bladder

It is hard to believe that anything good can come from having prostate cancer at age 47 but I have had a condition known as a shy bladder which means that I have a hell of a time urinating in public. As a child in grade school I would hold it in for up to 8 hours and it did not get any better as an adult. I did not really want to fly or go out to bars or sporting events because I would need to hold it in or try to push it out and take 30 minutes to do something that takes 30 seconds to do.I tried different therapys but nothing ever worked. My operation was in July and have full bladder control but now I can go to a public bathroom with 100 people in it and give my bladder alittle push and it all flows out. It is hard to believe that prostate cancer has made me feel normal. My first PSA since the operation was today and it was <0.1. My ED is still an issue but with the little blue pill I get 60 hard. The doctor said that I am doing great and that within 18 months that my ED issues should resolve themselves. I am cance free, have a great family and can now piss anywhere I want, life is good. They say that 10% of the population has this issue has anyone ever had this or know of someone that did or is it just me?

Re: Shy Bladder

I use to have the occasional shy bladder, especially when peeing in the old trough style urinals at Red Sox games or when trying to pee in a bottle during a long road trip. Also, I think inflamation of the prostate (probably from PCa) would occasionly cause issues in the past few years. Well, without the prostate in the way, it's now free flowing (but fortunately 99% continent after 4 months since LR surgery).

Re: Shy Bladder

Hi Pat and Steve,

I had never heard the term 'Shy bladder' before you mentioned it, and I gotta admit it made me laugh out loud here, because I have noticed one WEIRD side effect of PCa over these past years - I keep forgetting to zip-up my flies.

This was never an issue before 2005, but perhaps the terrible urgency and frequency of peeing in those early years after diagnosis somehow made me 'Ever-Ready' to pee.

Even though I am thankfully back to good bladder control, those flies are all too often open - even in public places!! One day I will be arrested!

You both have great results it seems - long may it continue!

Very Best Wishes,
