I had my RRP on 8/27 and the cath removed on 9/9. Afterward I notice a few small particles in my urine. Then nothing for about 10 days. Noew, the past three days I'm passing small (very small) pieces of dried blood and some gross blood. I contacted the urologist on call at hopkins and he told me not to worry about it. Most guys may be able to relate to my concern though and that is why is this happening now and why didn't it happen earlier. I'm starting to think that maybe there might be something seriously wrong with a kidney or disease in the bladder. It does make sense that residuals of the surgery would be passed in the urine but why now, is it bacause I feel better and am moving around much more?

The morning I was to have the catheter removed I passed a good 6 inch blood clot which was very startling and worrisome. I passed a little more right before they removed the catheter. The doctor saw this and told me not to worry about it because it is part of the heeling process. I passed some more the next couple of weeks and seem to loose the little urinary control I had after I passed the clots. However, after 4 months I'm continent and doing well.

Paul & Steve, thanks for your replies to my concern. Yesterday I had an appointment with the local urologist (he is also a surgeon, but did not do my surgery). He told me that the pass of some blood at the beginning of urination and some dried blood is perfectly normal. However, he could not tell my why it happened two weeks after the catheter was removed. I also spoke to the urologist on call at Hopkins again and he said it is normal. So I guess that is that. My local guy did the PSA yesterday also and I was not sure that it should have been done at 5-6 weeks rather than the Hopkins recommended 12 weeks, but he told me that that is his procedure with his surgical patients. Anyhow thanks for your responses again and if you guys have anything to add about the timing of PSAs, please let me know.

The only thing my urologist said about PSA testing is to be sure that you don't get the test too soon after any trauma to the prostate. Having sex, getting a DRE and having surgery will temporarily increase PSA output. I don't know how long after something like surgery to wait. My first PSA after the da Vinci was several months.
