PBS version of "Dracula"

--- I just finished watching the PBS Masterpiece Theatre version of "Dracula" (aired recently) on tape and was very disappointed.
This has to be the worst version of Dracula I have ever seen--an
abridged overly-Christianized *******ization of the story, starring
Little Lord Fauntlerloy/Buster Brown in Eddie Munster clothes as
Dracula. The only good thing about the show was Lucy Westenra, poor,
sexually frustrated, emotionally starved innocent, killed too soon by
her selfish, hypocritical husband and the vigilante Van Helsing.

At first when I heard that the Masterpiece Theatre version was
going to highlight the association between vampirism and the
Victorian fear of syphilis, I was intrigued. However, instead of
subtlely emphasizing the latent symbolism, sexual undertones of
Stoker's novel, this version completely changed the storyline,
creating a ridiculous subplot involving vampire-worshipping
diabolists. To make matters even worse, it also featured Exorcist-
type vampire scourging and a juvenilized emasculated Dracula. Gone is
Dracula's intelligence, wisdom, magnetism, seductiveness. Gone is
the majesty and rich tapestry of imagery so compelling in Stoker’s
novel.

What a massacre of this classic literary work!
