Ebirah, Horror Of The Deep

A review of 1966 film, Ebira Horror Of the Deep.

This is a classic story of love, intrigue, and a secret society hiding on an uncharted island. The ultra-secret, and extremely well financed, Red Bamboo, society, steals natives from infant island, to use as slaves on their own island, where goons chase them with machine guns and carelessly shoot through each other at waist level. Ebirah, crab monster extraordinaire, eats the ones who try to flee the island. The Red Bamboo keep Ebirah at bay with Ebirah Repellent. They make the age old mistake of bringing their Ebirah Repellent but forgetting their Godzilla Repellent, and he shows up on the scene and trashes their base. As they escape to sea, they discover far to late that their Ebirah Repellent has been contaminated by the slaves, who they thoughtlessly put in charge of producing it. This harkens to a scene where the slaves appear to be leaving out the key ingredient; oranges. Godzilla battles Ebirah and wins, and Mothra (The good monster) arrives to carry the natives home in a huge basket. The island is promptly thereafter destroyed in a nuclear explosion. This movie has a sub plot with human characters but dialog is confusing and hard to follow and sometimes just plain makes no sense, besides, Godzilla is the important part of this film. The best part of this movie is where the Red Bamboo goons are hunting for the protagonists, but run back because it starts to rain.
