Risk of increase in prostate size

I had a volume study on May 3 and the seed implant is scheduled on June 20. On February 17, during my biopsy the prostate size was 40 cc. In the volume study it was 49 cc. Ofcourse, the measurement in the volume study was more accurate. Is it possible that under normal circumstances my prostate volume will increase beyond 60 cc by June 20?

Re: Risk of increase in prostate size

Mazharul,

It is very difficult to measure the volume of a prostate gland with consistent accuracy because of it's irregular shape. I know my diagnosis was about fourteen years earlier than yours, but the inital reports of the estimated size of my prostate gland varied from 25 gm/cc to 75 gm/cc.

I would ay it is very unlikely ythat there would be a signifcant increase by fifty percent in the five or six weeks before you start your therapy.

Good luck

Re: Risk of increase in prostate size

I started lupron Nov.3, 2006. By the time I went in for EBRT on Jan. 8, 2007, it was estimated that my prostate had shrunk from around 40 cc to 20 cc. I was told this wasn't uncommon for those that had been prescribed ADT. Six months after seeding in March, it was estimated that my prostate was "flat and smooth" with a volume around 5 cc (DRE).

Re: Risk of increase in prostate size

Thanks for the prompt replies. There are different ways of measuring prostate volume. Using height, width and length will not be accurate. But 3D ultrasound finds the shape very well by measuring the cross sections along the prostate. This was used in my volume study.

Re: Risk of increase in prostate size

Hi Mazharul,

Your pre-brachytherapy volume study procedure is the most accurate determination of volume (with a prostate still inside you).

For a prostate size of 49 cc, the average typical rate of ongoing enlargement would be not much more than 1 cc per year. Therefore your prostate volume would still be less than 50 cc on 20th June.
