Bridge Street

Does anyone remember Billy Rainey who owned the barber shop beside Eastwoods pub which I seemed to think was previously run by a family called Heaneys or similar.
Also I seemed to recall a fish and chip shop called Lilleys (I think) further up on the other side next to a pub called The Horseshoe.

Re: Bridge Street

Billy,
in the late 50 / early 60s the barber shop was owned by Eddie Logue from Tullynacross, assisted by Patsy Dornan from Hilden. They were specialists for teddy boy haircuts.

Re: Bridge Street

Hi! Countydowner you obviously didnt come into Billy Raineys when I worked there as a "Soap Boy" as I was well known for my craic (have not used that word for 50 years). I use to work there after school as in those days nearly everyone depended on the barber for shaving as I seemed to recall the Rolls razor had just come out which was in a tin box and you moved it back and forward over a strap. I also remember there was a chap who lived in a house just above the Tavern (I think it was for the "down and outs)and he use to come in for a shave once a week. He had a beard like steel wire and I can remember my fingers tips use to bleeding after I rubbed his beard. Ah! the young ones to-day dont know their born today!!
