Lisburn Post Office

Hi all. Just to let you know that Lisburn PO in Linenhall Street is moving to Menary's old site at the top of Piper's Hill. I can remember when it was at the bottom of Railway Street. Then, when it moved to Linenhall Street, that site became the Lisburn Library. Now we have a first class library beside the Health Centre.

Change goes on. Menary's is, of course now in Bow Street Mall. I'm getting confused myself with all this.

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Ann
I can remember the old post office in Railway St. I won't mention any names but a boyhood friend from Hilden who lived quite close to my gran, one of the very few who had a bike then ( 1954 )was sent to Lisburn on an errand for a family from Bridge St Hilden. He was told to bring a Red Letter and believe it or not he went to the Post office . His mother went to the family concerned and told them in no uncertain terms that her son wasn't allowed to be sent in future.
After the Post Office moved out the library took it over and I then loaned out Alexander Irvine's book My lady of the chimney corner

Re: Re: Lisburn Post Office

I see on the front page of this weeks Star that the Down Royal Bar has closed!

Re: Lisburn Post Office

We were very young, but we sang; Miss Menary had a canary...

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Hi Dabbler,

Now, Now Dabbler, that is an old one, worse little songs now I am sure.

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Maggie, didn't know that the Down Royal was closing down. Wonder what will open there in its place, not that we went there very often, but the food wasn't bad.

Re: Re: Lisburn Post Office

Yes, Dabbler, I remember that one too. Just as bad as Hitler had only one wee ?. Goering had two but they were small. Himmler was also similar but poor old Goebels had no ? at all. You have to laugh, don't you. Forgive me any of you who are small-minded.

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Ann I'm sure it will be houses! I'm just a mile up the road from it

Re: Lisburn Post Office

I'm nipping off now with daft old innocent smiles in my head. No, you're right Donald, but just for this childish moment - Goodnight!

Re: Re: Lisburn Post Office

Dabbler,
We thought we were very daring to sing that rhyme, in secret of course. U naughty boy!!
Pat

Re: Re: Lisburn Post Office

Donald, call me naive - you won't be the first - but I don't get that item about the Red Letter from the Post Office? Can you explain or is it X-rated.

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Ann
Red Letter was a woman's magazine in the 50s, sold in newsagents and the poor boy made a fool of himself in the post office, then came back to Hilden and told us about it.

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Red Letter - I believe I used to read it to my Aunt Lizzie in Buggy Row. I remember blushing as I read aloud about a vicar and a girl having to wrap close in a blanket to keep out the cold in one adventure, and I think I read to her about Maria Martin in The Red Barn in the same mag. Go on, Donald, tell me I'm wrong.

Re: Re: Lisburn Post Office

Donald, yes, I vaguely remember a magazine called Red Letter. Was it something akin to People's Friend? You would hardly remember anyway, being younger than me. I think my mother bought People's Friend.

When my children were young, I used to love reading "The Weekly News". It was a Scottish magazine, full of items and stories, etc. There was a lot of reading in it anyway.

Re: Re: Re: Lisburn Post Office

My father loved reading Ireland's Own, in bed. It was full of wee true stories & facts of history etc. I still buy it & enjoy the songs printed in it, the interesting facts & historical tit-bits of old sites, etc. Call me sentimental but it is a good read for old fogies. Pat

Re: Lisburn Post Office

Loved reading the Sunday Post " The Browns " " Our Willie " Readers post. There was a Christmas Annual from it which I enjoyed. Irelands Own was a very nice newspaper.
Almost forgot that Devil,s newspaper " News of the World " which if the Clergy " Fr, Breen? had not forbidden us from the pulpit to buy and read we would have lost our immortal souls.
