Message:   Wow, this is a hot topic....

As a provider that has only been caring for children for about a year, please allow me to say this.

When I first started out, I was only charging $20.00. I felt it was a fair charge.... I was wrong.

I found that I was using money from my own pocket, to provide the adequate food needed(among other necessities.) $20.00 a day for one child, who is there for about 10 hours. That is $2.00 per hour. Would any one person out there really want to work for that much...

I have since had to raise my rates. Parents (not always very understanding) have adjusted to this fine. I agree with the saying "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" If you are paying one person such a little amount, how are they providing the care that the child deserves ie) Fresh Fruit and Vegetables, arts and crafts and the extras like cup cakes or the occasional pizza.

I like to say to myself, how would I take care of my own, and is this the quality care I would want for my own kids. Then I apply that to others.

This is a very tricky topic!!! There really is no right or wrong answer. And yes, everybody is entitled to breaks. And we could really all start to get petty about it and take the morning, afternoon and lunch break that the parents are getting when they are at work. For myself, the children are sitting right here with me coloring and drawing pictures. They are not being neglected or ignored.

P.S. You would be surprised at the amount of parents who have told me that I charge way too much. I have had heated discussions with people over rates. I live in Scarborough and I charge only $25.00 (this is low, I know. But I have to keep the kids I have or I would be out of business!)
