Strictly speaking it's not a rune, but a bindrune. I.e. it is a combination of several runes put together in a single design. Fact is, it could mean anything, we need to know what runes the designer intended to combine to make a judgement, and I presume the designer is not available to explain or you wouldn't have posted your question here. I can see 11 different runes in the design, but how many of them were intended and how many have been formed accidentally because of the way he/she has compiled the bindrune? No way of knowing. This is one of the problems with bindrunes drawn by folks with only a limited knowledge of the art. One of the prime requirements of bindrune design is that each rune should be obvious and identifiable within the whole, and another is that each component rune should share at least one stave with other elements of the bind. I usually limit bindrunes to 3 or 4 component runes to maintain these rules, but it isn't always easy to avoid the accidental rune. In this case I am thinking it was possibly Gebo, Laguz and Raido which could stand for the initials GLR in any order, or it could be intended as a charm to encourage progression towards a situation involving love for another person. But this is not a complete answer as amongst others, I can also see the Thurisaz rune in there which would add an element of chaos to the bind and probably defeat it's object. In any case, a bindrune intended as a charm would have no power to achieve its intended purpose unless it was empowered by ritual at the time of creation. It is a sad fact that a great number - perhaps even a majority - of runesters today are unaware of that. BTW I have no idea why there would be a little colon-type double-dot mark either side of the main design. That mark does appear in some ancient carvings and inscriptions, but only as punctuation to separate words or sentences. I has no runic significance. |

Thank you very much. I found what does it mean. It was created by Douglas P. from Death In June: "This is a combination of runes that is etched on to the To Drown A Rose (1986) 10" and the original cover for Rose Clouds of Holocaust (1995) LP. Pearce has also this bind rune as something of a signature. According to Pearce: "In 1986 whilst staying with Tibet in his flat in Freya Aswynn's house in north London over a period of 3 nights I dreamed I was falling in a sort of rain of indistinct runes. On each separate night I managed to concentrate enough on one particular rune to stop it from spinning and moving so I could actually see which one it was. When I awoke I made a note of it. After 3 nights the dream stopped and I decided to try and form an 'appropriate' bind rune from the original 3. This I did and after Freya saw it I basically was given a 'thumbs up' about the whole thing. It definitely does not refer to my name but it definitely does refer to ME."[10] The Odal rune has sometimes been used by Pearce. This can be seen very visibly on the Come Before Christ And Murder Love (1984) 7" cover. The algiz rune has often been used by Pearce for non-album Death In June purposes, appearing sometimes with a circle around it as seen on The World That Summer 2xLP (1986), on the official website and elsewhere." wikipedia.org |

Still doesn't identify the three intended runes, though, does it? I will be talking to Freya later in the week about our intended workshop in London. She will probably remember. Watch this space. |
