Runes for a hiking staff

Well I am in the process of making a new staff for my hiking, and would like to add some runes to it.

My initial thoughts are three:
Raido - Traveler's rune,

Sowilo - Rune of Energy and Revelation
or
Uruz - Rune of Strength,

and
Algiz - Rune of Protection

Now I will admit I am an absolute newbie on runes. I have however always been interested in them, at least since I started to track down my Nordic ancestry, when I was about 15 or so (24, now).

I am just now finding myself with the time and money (to buy wood burning, and carving kits and such) to pursue my interest in them. I tried to find some books on them in the library, and local book shops, but will have to go online to do order them it looks like. As well as find information from such great sites as these.

Anyway, to the point; is there anything contradictory in the runes I have chosen, or unfitting. I'm still not too sure about that. But they all seem to go along with what I would want when backpacking in the wilderness of Montana.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Runes for a hiking staff

You may want to also use Ehwaz (M shaped) as it is also a rune of safe travel and represents the strength/aid of the horse. If you are only using 3 runes I'd go with Ehwaz, Raido and Algiz.
