Help with writing in Runes

Hi

I'm completely new to runes, and in need of some advice.

My boyfriend has norse ancestory, and can read runes and use them for writing. For our anniversary I would like to get him a ring with an inscription writen in runes, showing our names and with the word love or something represeting love.

I have no idea where to start, and I can't ask the one person I know who knows about runes as it will ruin the surprise for him!

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks

Kate

Re: Help with writing in Runes

Be careful when using any of the transcription programs you might find anywhere on the www. Sunnyway's transcriber is good, but it isn't perfect.

Runes are phonetic, in other words you write things in runes they way they SOUND, not the way they are spelled in modern English. Most of these programs can't tell how things are pronounced, only how they are spelled.

So for example if you wanted to transcribe the name Thomas into runes the program would tell you Thurisaz Othila Mannaz Ansuz Sowilo. But, that's not the way you say the name Thomas. It starts with a hard T sound not the soft TH, so the correct transcription would be Tiwaz Othila Mannaz Ansuz Sowilo. That's just one example. Try a few other words with unorthodox pronunciation characteristecs like THROUGH,
or MOTION, and you will see the problem.

There are a number of pages throughout the Runemaker Group of websites that explain about transcription in more detail including www.runemaker.com and www.runes.info. If you are stuck, or haven't got time to learn the ins and outs of transcription there is a service available at http://www.runemaker.com/wares/transcript.shtml

Re: Help with writing in Runes

Sigurd, I already emailed you about this. I don't have the time to do this kind of work for free because I get dozens of requests every day and it can take anything from 20 minutes to a couple of hours work. So I have to charge a small amount to pay for the time.

As I mentioned in my email, there is a service available on this page http://www.runemaker.com/wares/transcript.shtml where your phrase of 5 words can be transcribed for just US$8.95. The transcription is delivered by email attachment within a few hours.
