Protection

I was wondering if anyone knew how to best protect a house from otherwordly influenses. A friend of mine told me that a bindrune in every coner of the house worked well for him but is there any other ways that you can think of i would be very thankful.

Re: Protection

Try my friend Ian Casely's website at www.metalartist.co.uk. He makes large amulets in steel especially for the protection of home and property.

Re: Protection

So Oswald, I don't think there is, but are there any runological teachings concerning like underground water?

I know we spoke earlier and I believe you stated that you didn't know if "grids of radiation" or ley lines would affect the casting, but also it is supposed to be unhealthy to sleep or live over top of underground water sources. There is some teachings as to how to protect your house from this by redirecting the energy with some copper...rods...or something. I'm unsure of that. Is there any runic practices for things like this?

Re: Protection

Sorry Jade. I don't know of any runic practices dealing with adverse effects caused by underground or running water.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Re: Protection

Well, in old times before anyone built a house, castle, hospital, etc..., they would have a competant dowser dowse the area to make sure there are no negative areas there.

Ants build their hills over these and cats enjoy sleepig over them (this is what I've read), certain plants grow over them, and certain plants will not. Supposedly they are harmful to dogs and humans, and they have many other effects.

Anyway, would a bindrune do anything to guard against these? Like a good health bindrune?

Re: Protection

Alu is a runic power word literally meaning "Holy Drink".

The association of the word with protection is presumed by many authorities to be a misconception arising from misinterpretation of the rune name Algiz. The two words are not connected in any other way.

Algiz is the name of the rune of protection. The origin of the name is in some doubt. In some references it is thought to have derived from the antlers of an elk, and in others from the razor-sharp sedge grass.

Using Algiz on it's own or in combination with other runes can afford protection of various kinds when empowered correctly.

I don't know the nature of the Holy Drink. I have seen it equated with both ale and mead, but have no definitive source for either. Nor do I know the method by which the word Alu or the drink itself can provide protection. I would be very interested to find out if anyone knows.

Re: Protection

Well, of course there are other ways. For example, you can put the rune for protection and opportunity, Yr, but beware! This rune also symbolizes the end of something or, in tragic situations, death. Use this rune under serious circumstances only.

Re: Protection

Here again with Ihwaz (Yr as you call it) there is an element of misconception about it's connection with death.

Ihwaz means Yew and is considered to be an unlucky rune becuase in Saxon (and earlier) times the Yew was used to surround graveyards - being buried because of death was certainly an unlucky eventuality!

In England the Yew is most commonly found today in old Saxon churchyards. The reason the ancients hedged graveyards with Yew is that it can grow to a dense thicket that forms a natural barrier and its spines and fruit are poisonous. Thus, animals were deterred from scavanging human remains protected in such a way.

I believe the fact that Ihwaz is rune number 13 is the origin of our present-day superstition of "unlucky thirteen", despite alternative attributions for this superstition proposed in recent novels dealing with the crusades and the Knights Templar.

The correct interpretation of Ihwaz is defence because of these attributes of the Yew tree. It can also be taken to mean the Archer's Bow which was often fashioned from Yew wood. The English longbow was a prime weapon of defence (and of attack) as any French soldier at Agincourt would readily have testified!

Re: Protection

Runic Protections for your house from other worldy influences.

Algiz, Elhaz, Eolh, just a thew names it is known by. The stupendous resistant power of the Elk. It is the magically the most powerful defensive warding sign. It is also good for a personal protection, if you have heard of the 'Armor of Elhaz'. Bind this rune with the rune Thorn will stop anything that wishes you harm into your house.

Thorn,Thurisaz Thors rune, the thorn on Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) protects the plant working passively deterring attackers. Magically this rune invokes the powers of resistance present in Thorn trees and the power of the earth giant known as Thurs or Moldthurs, and can be used to channel defensive powers.

I have been told though if you don't want to block everything out of your how and want to let in good thing, energies ect. To place the rune Dagaz abover each of your external doors. This will deter anything bad from you house but invite in positive energies into your house.

Re: Protection

It is such a common design appearing on hundreds of websites and dozens of books I didn't bother to include it on the practical bindrune amulets page because I very rarely get asked for it as an amulet. Most often I am asked about the Safe Journey design or the one for Protection of a Vehicle.

However if you want an amulet for Raido-Ihwaz I can certainly do that for you, just order the custom design RM5000.

Re: Protection

Ah well, you see Manu. I don't work for free. If you haven't the time to research the design for yourself and you want me to do the artwork for you I'm afraid I would like to be paid for my time.

You can order an amulet on the Practical Bindrunes page or you can order bindrune artwork from me using the order from on http://www.runemaker.com/wares/personals.shtml and choose item RM58. Just put R and Z in the intials box and I will send the design in an hour or so as an email attachment.

Oops! Forgot to mention. You do realize I hope that the tattoo will have no effect unless it is empowered by runic ritual? My service includes a copy of that.

Re: Protection

runemaker (feb 28/07) wrote alu means holy drink, but many more meanings have been ascribed to this formula(?)
Simek suggests a basic meaning of 'ecstacy, magic
the website ingwaz.nl has a number os other possibilities besides ale or beer, as prosperity, whole, toast, hail, luck, safety, protection, perhaps even holy
alu was used as an inscription on houses as a charm of some sort
