PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT SITE

This forum is for the discussion of anything to do with Prostate Cancer.

There are only  two rules: no commercials (although it is quite OK to recommend treatment choices and medical people based on your personal research) or fundraisers and no flaming - be polite at all times.

Since we are aiming for it to be a true International Forum it would be good if you showed your country in your post.

Subject:   Facts (Numbers) about post robotic prostatectomy Re continence & potency

Message:   There are so many numbers out there and I realize that every case is unique but I would like to hear from those that have had robotic prostatectomy. How soon did you regain a reasonable, functional level continence. I have read anything from a few days to a few weeks to a month or two. On the longer side I have read up to a year or more.

Same question about potency. I realize that this is more iffy as a result of the surgery and a bit more difficult to quantify. I have read of 1 or 2 cases where an erection occurred while the catheter was still in. I have read from weeks to months (seems to be more common) to a year or so to never. I am 58 and have never needed ED medication to achieve a firm erection. I would consider it a major success if I could achieve a firm erection with oral ED medication after surgery. Caverject does not count as a success.

I am considering robotic prostatectomy but greatly fear the possibility of the above complications. I know that I should be more concerned about getting rid of the cancer (and I am) but I just can't get over my fear of taking two systems that have functioned so very well for me for so many years and coming out of surgery with them possibly greatly compromised.

I guess I am just trying to find some good news here.

Thanks for any input,

Jim S.
