Speaking from the experience of 2 winds at this location only last month I might be able to shed a little light on the problem?
It is normal practice at winding holes to put the bow into the winding hole, often this is necessary due to shallow water.
At Hockley Heath, bridge 27 is very close to the winding hole such that it is much easier to wind if the stern is put into the winding hole which has more than a sufficient depth of water. This requires the steerer to stop the boat prior to the intended manoeuvre.
On both occasions there was a boat present that was only likely to be hit if a bow first movement was attempted.
This is no excuse for a high speed collision leading to an unsightly dent of course.
