"Winding holes are too few and far between. If BW did some research and provided more at bottlenecks, this could save frayed tempers and make planning a cruise less hit and miss."
There is already some evidence of this.
2 years ago we were in a queue waiting at Stone bottom lock on the T & M. At least one boat in the queue was intending to wind above the flight of 4 locks.
When passing through Stone last month I discovered that a new winding hole has been constructed below the locks close to the pipe bridge. Not only will this reduce queues it will save water of course. A total of 8 locks of water per boat!
The downside is that it has reduced the number of spaces for visitor moorings by 2.
The following week I discovered another new winding hole on the Staffs & Worcs south of Kinver. This is less than a mile from the Kinver moorings just north of Whittington Horse Bridge and Whittington Lock.
This new winding hole will be very useful for those who wish to make the short detour from Stourton Junction to experience the delights of Kinver and the views from Kinver Edge.
