Message:   I am glad you posted the last sentence as well! There is too much of "Eastern Europeans doing this that and the other that one should not do" about these days.

I understand that British fishermen frown at Eastern Europeans taking and subsequently eating the catch - but one should note that this is generally so on the continent (or atleast in Central and Eastern Europe) since we here do not see the point in catch and release, it is most coupled with and feast on it! And yes, when in Rome one should do as the Romans do, but it takes a) an explanation and b) an understanding for this, as a simple observation of the not so much local habit behaviour of many Britons abroad will easily proof.

Working in Eastern Europe regularly trying to get tourists from there to come to Ireland (including this beautiful piece of Ireland that is part of the UK) I am glad to hear of Eastern Europeans having come on the canals. And as any newcomer they make mistakes. Having travelled a fair bit now on the canals I can vouch for the fact that many locals and probably age long canal users do moor in all sort of places one should not, which to me is far more annoying than any hiring crew (regardless of nationality) on a first outing. Once they have moved around the system for hopefully at least a week they will begin to understand some of the rules that they thought to be as meaningful as a yellow line along the road (or a max speed "advice" given).

Today I am (or I hope I am) a very considerate boater - but in my first couple of years there where a few things I am not happy about if I see others doing them now.

We all should encourage and help newcomers on the canals, and if they are foreign it should serve rather as a part excuse than part of the argument against them.
