dual-booting FC5 and XP
Excellent article on making a dual-boot XP/Linux machine. I installed a second harddrive and want to install Fedora Core 5. Can the /boot partition for Linux be located on the second hard drive (hdb), as long as the boot sector from the second hard drive is copied to the first drive and I modify boot.ini accordingly? |

Sorry for replying so late. I think you CAN install Fedora on another hard disk, create the bootsector file, copy the bOOTSECTOR file to C: drive in the first hard disk. I just checked my machine. I have the same setup. The boot and swap partitions are in the second hard disk adn the root partition is in the first hard disk. The bootsector was created for the boot partition in the second hard disk and copied to the C: drive of the first hard disk. The boot.ini was modified and it boots just fine. I use Mandriva 2007 Linux now. Yesterday, I updated the multiboot article with a new screenshot of how to create the boot floppy. |

I meant I have almost have the same setup. Your root partition is also in the second hard disk while mine is in the first. It will still work. The reason why have the swap partition in another hard disk is that it speeds up the OS quite a bit as file requests are then distributed among two hard disks instead of the same one. Of course, one has to ensure that the hard disks are on different IDE connectors. |
