Device Manager keeps expanding and collapsing

I'm having a lot of problems with WinXP Pro. I think sp1.
The system seems to be very busy. Task Manager does not identify any particular process. My external USB DVD burner is not recognized. I've tried device manager but it just keeps flashing in expanded mode to collapsed mode. It's really weird. Any suggestins, please?

I've done numerous spyware/adware/virus checks on this puter and even in 'safe mode' the Device Manager keeps switching between expand/collapse modes

Re: Device Manager keeps expanding and collapsing

Hello "In Pheonix, Arizona,"

Sorry to have replied so late.

1. Uninstall SP1.
2. Remove problematic devices from the PC if possible.
3. Install SP2.
4. Get latest the motherboard chipset drivers.
5. Ensure that the devices are installed properly - no loose connections or forced insertions.
5. Install the devices again.

It is not usual for malware to affect devices. If you are worried this might be the case, then

1. Make a clean install of Windows XP. (Delete program files and Windows folders and reinstall WinXP. All current settings will be gone. You will also have to re-install all your programs again.)
2. Install SP2.
3. Install DirectX 9c
4. Install motherboard chipset drivers.
5. Install extra devices one by one, following each one with the relevant driver installation.
and resolve any problems. If there are any interrupt (IRQ) conflicts, refer your motherboard manual for IRQs designated for PCI IRQ steering. Manually set these free IRQs for the devices.
6.
